Syringe pumps, also known as syringe drivers or syringe infusion pumps, are medical devices designed for the precise and controlled delivery of drugs into a patient’s body. They are widely used across many areas of medicine, including anesthesiology, resuscitation, intensive care, pediatrics, and neonatology, as well as surgery and obstetrics.

Syringe pumps operate by delivering the drug in microdoses, either mechanically or automatically. The device is fitted with a syringe that is filled with the drug and connected to the pump. The pump controls the rate and volume of delivery, ensuring precise dosing.

Syringe pumps come in mechanical and electromechanical, portable and stationary designs. Mechanical pumps require manual control of the delivery rate, while electromechanical pumps automatically regulate the rate according to preset parameters. Portable pumps are convenient for use outside a hospital, for example in ambulances, while stationary pumps are intended for use in medical facilities.

Modern syringe pumps offer a range of features that improve convenience and safety of use. They can store operating parameters in non-volatile memory, transmit data to a computer, automatically detect syringe type, display operating parameters on an LCD screen, and include alarm systems for line occlusion, near-empty syringe, incorrect input, missing syringe, or low battery.

Syringe pumps are indispensable for highly effective infusion therapy, resuscitation, intensive care, and other procedures requiring precise drug dosing. They enable continuous drug delivery, which is especially important when treating patients who require constant monitoring of their condition.
