Description
Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are portable electronic devices designed for use by laypeople without medical training when providing first aid. They automatically diagnose cardiac rhythm disturbances and can deliver a defibrillation shock if indicated.
After being switched on, the AED analyzes the victim's heart rhythm and, if necessary, gives the operator voice instructions. These instructions include removing clothing from the victim's chest, placing the electrode pads on the body, and delivering a shock (if indicated).
As of June 2023, AED use is not formally included in the list of first-aid procedures in Russia, but it is recommended in line with international guidelines. Early defibrillation is a key factor in saving lives during cardiac arrest. Using an AED significantly increases the chances of survival by quickly and effectively restoring a normal heart rhythm.
